- 1 Drie jaar later vernam de aanhang van Judas, dat Demétrius, de zoon van Seleúkus, met een sterk leger en een grote vloot de haven van Tripolis was uitgevaren
- 2 zich van het land had meester gemaakt, en Antiochus met diens voogd Lúsias uit de weg had geruimd.
- 3 Er was toen een zekere Alkimus, die vroeger hogepriester was geweest, maar ten tijde der vijandelijkheden uit eigen beweging was afgevallen. Daar hij inzag, dat hij met geen mogelijkheid meer iets kon bereiken en geen toegang zou krijgen tot het heilige altaar
- 4 ging hij in het jaar 15 naar koning Demétrius, en bracht hem een gouden krans met een palmtak, en verder nog de gebruikelijke olijftakken uit de tempel. Overigens hield hij zich die dag nog rustig.
- 5 Maar hij nam de eerste de beste gelegenheid te baat, om zijn schandelijk plan ten uitvoer te brengen. Want toen Demétrius hem eens op een raadsvergadering liet komen en hem naar de stemming en de plannen der Joden vroeg, gaf hij ten antwoord:
- 6 De Joden, die chasidéen worden genoemd, en die ander leiding staan van Judas, den Makkabeër, maken telkens oorlog en oproer, en laten het rijk niet tot rust komen.
- 7 Dit is de reden, dat ik van mijn erfelijke waardigheid, ik bedoel het hogepriesterschap, werd beroofd, en dat ik nu hier ben gekomen
- 8 vooreerst uit oprechte bezorgdheid voor de rechten van den koning, maar vervolgens ook in het belang van mijn eigen landgenoten. Want door het domme drijven van genoemde mannen lijdt ons gehele volk ontzaglijke schade.
- 9 Koning, het is dus gewenst, dat gij u over dit alles nauwkeurig laat inlichten, en dan voor ons land en ons verdrukt volk maatregelen treft, die ingegeven zijn door de welwillendheid, die gij allen bewijst.
- 10 Want zolang Judas nog leeft, komt de staat nooit tot rust.
- 11 Na deze woorden hitsten de andere gunstelingen, die Judas vijandig gezind waren, Demétrius nog meer op.
- 12 En onmiddellijk ontbood hij Nikánor, den vroegeren hoofdman over de olifanten, en stelde hem aan tot bevelhebber over Judea. Hij liet hem vertrekken
- 13 en gaf hem de schriftelijke opdracht mee, Judas te doden, zijn aanhang uit elkaar te jagen en Alkimus aan te stellen tot hogepriester van de verheven tempel.
- 14 Met hele groepen sloten zich nu bij Nikánor al de heidenen aan, die voor Judas uit Judea waren weggevlucht, en die nu hoopten, dat de tegenslag en het ongeluk der Joden hun eigen geluk zouden worden.
- 15 Bij het bericht van Nikánors opmars en van de vijandige houding der heidenen, bestrooiden de Joden zich met stof, en richtten zich smekend tot Hem, die zijn volk voor eeuwig had bevestigd, en die altijd zichtbaar zijn erfdeel beschermt.
- 16 Op bevel van hun aanvoerder trokken zij in allerijl op, en stietten bij het dorp Dessaoe op den vijand.
- 17 Sjimon, de broer van Judas, raakte met Nikánor slaags, maar werd door het plotseling verschijnen van den vijand min of meer aan het wankelen gebracht.
- 18 Toch waagde Nikánor het niet, het pleit met een bloedbad te beslechten, daar hij gehoord had, hoe groot de moed was van Judas' mannen, en hoe onverschrokken zij voor hun vaderland vochten.
- 19 Daarom vaardigde hij Posidónius, Teodótus en Mattatias af, om vredesvoorstellen in te dienen en in ontvangst te nemen.
- 20 Na vrij langdurige besprekingen stelde de veldheer zijn soldaten op de hoogte van de toestand, waarna de overeenkomst met algemene stemmen werd goedgekeurd.
- 21 Zij bepaalden een dag, waarop zij elkaar onder vier ogen zouden treffen. Van beide partijen reed een strijdwagen voor, en er waren zetels klaar gezet.
- 22 Intussen had Judas op verschillende belangrijke punten gewapende soldaten geplaatst voor het geval dat de vijand onverwachts verraad mocht plegen. De onderhandelingen verliepen echter ongestoord.
- 23 Daarna bracht Nikánor een bezoek aan Jerusalem, waar hij niets afkeurenswaardigs deed; hij dankte zelfs de legers af, die zich met hele groepen bij hem hadden aangesloten.
- 24 Voortdurend zocht hij het gezelschap van Judas, daar hij zich met hart en ziel tot hem voelde aangetrokken.
- 25 Ook gaf hij hem de raad, te trouwen en een gezin te stichten. Hij trouwde dan ook, was gelukkig en genoot van zijn leven.
- 26 Maar toen Alkimus deze wederzijdse vriendschap bemerkte, verschafte hij zich een afschrift van de afgesloten verdragen, ging er mee naar Demétrius, en beschuldigde Nikánor van hoogverraad, omdat hij den rijksvijand Judas als zijn opvolger zou hebben aangewezen.
- 27 De koning was woedend, en opgehitst door de lasterpraatjes van den schurk, schreef hij Nikánor, dat de verdragen zijn goedkeuring niet hadden, en dat hij hem beval, den Makkabeër zo snel mogelijk geboeid naar Antiochië te zenden.
- 28 Dit bericht bracht Nikánor in de grootste verwarring. Want van de ene kant viel het hem zwaar, het verdrag te schenden, daar de ander geen onrecht gepleegd had;
- 29 maar van de andere kant was het niet mogelijk, zich tegen den koning te verzetten. Hij wachtte dus een geschikte gelegenheid af, om de opdracht langs een omweg uit te voeren.
- 30 Intussen had Judas bemerkt, dat Nikánor hem minder vriendelijk was gaan behandelen, en bij de regelmatige samenkomsten tamelijk terughoudend was geworden. Hij besloot er uit, dat deze onvriendelijkheid niets goeds kon voorspellen. Daarom verzamelde hij een flink aantal soldaten om zich heen, en hield zich voor Nikánor schuil.
- 31 Toen deze begreep, dat hij door het besliste optreden van Judas was overtroefd, begaf hij zich naar de hoogheilige tempel juist op het ogenblik, dat de priesters de voorgeschreven offers brachten, en eiste van hen, dat zij den man zouden uitleveren.
- 32 Zij verklaarden echter onder ede, dat zij niet wisten, waar de bedoelde zich ophield.
- 33 Daarop stak hij zijn rechterhand dreigend tegen de tempel uit en zwoer: Als gij mij Judas niet geboeid uitlevert, zal ik dit gebouw met de grond gelijk maken, het offeraltaar vernielen en op dezelfde plaats een prachtige tempel voor Dionúsus bouwen.
- 34 Na deze bedreiging trok hij af. Toen hieven de priesters de handen ten hemel, en smeekten Hem, die altijd strijdt voor ons volk; ze zeiden:
- 35 Heer, Gij hebt van niemand iets nodig, en toch hebt Gij een tempel gewild, om onder ons te wonen.
- 36 Heilige Heer, Bron van alle heiligheid, bewaar dus dit huis, dat nog pas is gereinigd, steeds voor ontering.
- 37 Daarop werd een van de oudsten uit Jerusalem, Rages genaamd, bij Nikánor aangeklaagd. Hij was een man, die zijn medeburgers liefhad, zeer gunstig bekend stond, en om zijn goedhartigheid ‘Vader der Joden’ werd genoemd.
- 38 Reeds onder de vroegste vijandelijkheden had hij de zaak van het jodendom verdedigd, en vol vuur lijf en leven voor de joodse godsdienst op het spel gezet.
- 39 Maar juist daarom zond Nikánor, die een openlijk bewijs wilde leveren van zijn haat tegen de Joden, meer dan vijfhonderd soldaten, om hem gevangen te nemen.
- 40 Want hij was overtuigd, dat deze aanhouding voor de Joden een zware slag zou betekenen.
- 41 Maar toen de troepen zich van zijn verschanste woning dreigden meester te maken, en reeds de hoofdpoort met geweld openbraken, en vuur lieten halen, om de deuren te verbranden, doorstak hij zich met zijn zwaard, nu hij zich aan alle kanten zag ingesloten.
- 42 Hij wilde liever een eervolle dood sterven, dan in de handen van schurken vallen, die hem zouden mishandelen op een wijze, die zijn hoge afkomst onwaardig was.
- 43 Doch daar de stoot, tengevolge van opwinding en haast, minder goed was gelukt, en de troep reeds door de deuren binnendrong, klom hij moedig op de muur, en wierp zich onverschrokken naar beneden, boven op de troepen.
- 44 Deze weken echter snel achteruit, zodat er een open ruimte ontstond, waar hij midden op terecht kwam.
- 45 Maar hij leefde nog, en ofschoon het bloed bij stromen uit zijn smartelijke wonden vloeide, sprong hij ziedend van toorn overeind, rende door de troepen heen, klom op een steile rots
- 46 en reeds geheel en al leeggebloed, rukte hij zich nog de ingewanden uit het lijf, en wierp ze met beide handen boven op de troepen. En nadat hij den Heer over ziel en leven nog had gesmeekt, dat Hij ze hem terug zou geven, gaf hij de geest.

Basic Hash Usage Explained
At getBible, we've established a robust system to keep our API synchronized with the Crosswire project's modules. Let me explain how this integration works in simple terms.
We source our Bible text directly from the Crosswire modules. To monitor any updates, we generate "hash values" for each chapter, book, and translation. These hash values serve as unique identifiers that change only when the underlying content changes, thereby ensuring a tight integration between getBible and the Crosswire modules.
Every month, an automated process runs for approximately three hours. During this window, we fetch the latest Bible text from the Crosswire modules. Subsequently, we compare the new hash values and the text with the previous ones. Any detected changes trigger updates to both our official getBible hash repository and the Bible API for all affected translations. This system has been operating seamlessly for several years.
Once the updates are complete, any application utilizing our Bible API should monitor the hash values at the chapter, book, or translation level. Spotting a change in these values indicates that they should update their respective systems.
Hash values can change due to various reasons, including textual corrections like adding omitted verses, rectifying spelling errors, or addressing any discrepancies flagged by the publishers maintaining the modules at Crosswire.
The Crosswire initiative, also known as the SWORD Project, is the "source of truth" for getBible. Any modifications in the Crosswire modules get reflected in our API within days, ensuring our users access the most precise and current Bible text. We pledge to uphold this standard as long as getBible exists and our build scripts remain operational.
