- 1 در رؤیائی که خداوند متعال به من نشان داد دیدم که بعد از دروِ محصول اولِ غله که سهم پادشاه بود و محصول دوم تازه سر زده بود، خداوند خیل ملخ را بوجود آورد.
- 2 بعد از آنکه ملخها همه گیاه سبز زمین را خوردند، من به خداوند گفتم: «ای خداوند متعال، از حضور تو استدعا می کنم که قوم برگزیدۀ خود را ببخشی. آن ها قوم ضعیف و کوچک هستند و نمی توانند در برابر این مصیبت طاقت کنند.»
- 3 پس خداوند هم رحم کرد و فرمود: «این حادثه اتفاق نمی افتد.»
- 4 خداوند متعال در رؤیای دیگری، آتش بزرگی را که برای مجازات مردم آماده کرده بود، به من نشان داد. آن آتش آب های عمیق زمین را بلعید و تمام نباتات را سوختاند.
- 5 من گفتم: «ای خداوند، خدا التماس می کنم از این کار منصرف شو، زیرا قوم اسرائیل کوچک و ضعیف است و طاقت این بلا را ندارد.»
- 6 پس خداوند فرمود: «این حادثه هم اتفاق نمی افتد.»
- 7 بعد در رؤیای دیگری دیدم که خداوند در کنار دیوار که با شاقول بنا شده بود، ایستاده شاقولی در دست داشت.
- 8 از من پرسید: «عاموس، چه می بینی؟» من جواب دادم: «یک شاقول.» خداوند فرمود: «با این شاقول می خواهم نشان بدهم که قوم برگزیدۀ من مثل این دیوار راست نیست، لهذا می خواهم که آن ها را مجازات کنم.
- 9 و مکان های بلند اسحاق و معابدی را که اسرائیل بنا کرده اند، ویران می کنم و خاندان یَرُبعام را با شمشیر نابود می سازم.»
- 10 آنگاه اَمَصیا، کاهن بیت ئیل، به یَرُبعام، پادشاه اسرائیل خبر داد و گفت: «عاموس در بین قوم اسرائیل فتنه برانگیخته و علیه تو توطئه چیده است و سخنان او کشور ما را نابود خواهد ساخت.
- 11 زیرا او می گوید که تو با شمشیر بقتل می رسی و قوم اسرائیل از کشور شان تبعید شده به اسارت برده می شوند.»
- 12 بعد اَمَصیا به عاموس گفت: «ای نبی، از این کشور خارج شو. به سرزمین یهودا برگرد و در آنجا با موعظه هایت پول به دست آور و نان بخور.
- 13 دیگر هرگز در بیت ئیل موعظه نکن، زیرا اینجا محل عبادت پادشاه و معبد مردم ما می باشد.»
- 14 عاموس جواب داد: «من نه نبی هستم و نه پسر نبی. وظیفۀ من اصلاً چوپانی و میوه چینی است.
- 15 اما خداوند مرا از کار چوپانی گرفت و فرمود: «برو برای قوم اسرائیل موعظه کن.»
- 16 حالا تو می گوئی که علیه قوم اسرائیل موعظه نکنم، پس ای اَمَصیا، به کلام خداوند گوش بده که به تو می فرماید:
- 17 زن تو در این شهر فاحشه می شود، فرزندانت در جنگ بقتل می رسند و ملک و زمینت تقسیم شده به دیگران تعلق می گیرد. خودت هم در یک کشور بیگانه می میری و قوم اسرائیل از وطن خود تبعید می شوند.»
