- 1 بِلعام به بالاق گفت: «در اینجا هفت قربانگاه بساز و برای من هفت گاو و هفت قوچ آماده کن.»
- 2 بالاق طبق هدایت او رفتار کرد و آن ها بر هر قربانگاه یک گاو و یک قوچ را قربانی کردند.
- 3 بعد بِلعام به بالاق گفت: «در کنار قربانی سوختنی خود بایست و من می روم تا ببینم که آیا خداوند به ملاقات من می آید یا نه. هر چه که او به من بفرماید ترا آگاه می سازم.» پس بِلعام تنها بالای تپه ای رفت
- 4 و در آنجا خدا او را ملاقات کرد. بِلعام به او گفت: «من هفت قربانگاه تهیه کردم و بر هر کدام آن ها یک گاو و یک قوچ را قربانی کردم.»
- 5 خداوند به بِلعام فرمود که چه بگوید و او را دوباره پیش بالاق فرستاد تا پیام او را برساند.
- 6 پس بِلعام پیش بالاق که با تمام بزرگان موآب در کنار قربانی سوختنی خود ایستاده بود برگشت
- 7 و خطابۀ خود را این چنین ایراد کرد: «بالاق مرا از کشور ارام، از کوههای مشرق آورد. به من گفت: «بیا و یعقوب را بخاطر من نفرین کن. بیا و قوم اسرائیل را لعنت بفرست.»
- 8 چطور می توانم قومی را نفرین کنم که خدا نفرین نکرده است؟ چگونه می توانم مردمی را لعنت کنم که خدا لعنت نکرده است؟

- 9 از فراز کوهها آن ها را می بینم، از بالای تپه ها آن ها را تماشا می کنم. آن ها مردمی هستند که تنها زندگی می کنند، خود را در جملۀ اقوام دیگر بشمار نمی آورند.
- 10 آن ها مانند غبار اند، بی شمار و بی حساب. ای کاش این سعادت را می داشتم که مثل یکی از افراد قوم برگزیدۀ خدا بمیرم. ای کاش عاقبت من مثل عاقبت آن ها باشد.»
- 11 بالاق از بِلعام پرسید: «این چه کاری بود که تو به من کردی؟ من به تو گفتم که دشمنانم را نفرین کنی، اما تو آن ها را برکت دادی.»
- 12 بِلعام جواب داد: «من فقط آنچه را که خداوند به من الهام فرمود بر زبان آوردم.»
- 13 بعد بالاق به او گفت: «بیا که ترا به یک جای دیگر ببرم. از آنجا تنها یک قسمت قوم اسرائیل را می بینی. از همانجا آن ها را برای من نفرین کن.»
- 14 پس بالاق او را به مزرعۀ صوفیم که بر کوه فِسجه واقع است بُرد. در آنجا هفت قربانگاه ساخت و بر هر کدام آن ها یک گاو و یک قوچ را قربانی کرد.
- 15 بِلعام به پادشاه گفت: «تو در همینجا کنار قربانی سوختنی ات بایست. من در آنجا برای ملاقات خداوند می روم.»
- 16 خداوند به ملاقات بِلعام آمد و به او فرمود که پیام او را به بالاق برساند.
- 17 بِلعام پیش بالاق که با بزرگان موآب کنار قربانی سوختنی ایستاده بود، برگشت. بالاق از او پرسید: «خداوند چه فرمود؟»
- 18 بِلعام این چنین بیان کرد: «ای بالاق، برخیز و بشنو! ای پسر صفور به من گوش بده!
- 19 خدا بشر نیست که دروغ بگوید، یا بنی آدم نیست که عقیدۀ خود را تغییر بدهد. به وعده ای که می دهد، وفا می کند.
- 20 به من امر فرموده است که آن ها را برکت بدهم. او به آن ها برکت داده است و من آن را تغییر داده نمی توانم.
- 21 او در آیندۀ اسرائیل بدبختی و مشکلاتی نمی بیند خداوند، خدای شان با آن ها است. آن ها او را به عنوان پادشاه خویش اعلام می کنند.
- 22 خدائی که آن ها را از مصر بیرون آورد قوی و نیرومند است.
- 23 کسی نمی تواند اسرائیل را جادو کند و افسون کسی بر آن ها کارگر نیست. دربارۀ اسرائیل می گویند: «خدا چه کارهائی برای آن ها کرده است.»
- 24 این قوم را ببینید که مثل شیر ماده بر می خیزند و مانند شیر نر بپا می ایستند. تا وقتی که شکار خود را نخورند و خون کشته شدگان خود را ننوشند، نمی خوابند.»
- 25 بالاق به بِلعام گفت: «نه آن ها را نفرین کن و نه به آن ها برکت بده.»
- 26 بِلعام در جوابش گفت: «من برایت گفتم که آنچه را خداوند به من الهام کند، آن را می گویم.»
- 27 آنگاه بالاق به او گفت: «حالا بیا که به یک جای دیگر برویم، شاید مورد پسند خدا باشد و به تو اجازه بدهد که قوم اسرائیل را نفرین کنی.»
- 28 پس بالاق او را بر قلۀ فغور که مشرف به بیابان بود، بُرد.
- 29 بِلعام به او گفت که هفت قربانگاه بسازد و هفت گاو و هفت قوچ را برای قربانی آماده کند.
- 30 و بالاق مطابق هدایت او عمل کرد.
