- 1 Pe vremea lui David, a fost o foamete care a ţinut trei ani. David a întrebat pe Domnul, şi Domnul a zis: „Din pricina lui Saul şi a casei lui sângeroase, pentru că a ucis pe gabaoniţi este foametea aceasta.”
- 2 Împăratul a chemat pe gabaoniţi să le vorbească. (Gabaoniţii nu erau dintre copiii lui Israel, ci erau o rămăşiţă a amoriţilor; copiii lui Israel se legaseră faţă de ei cu un jurământ, şi totuşi Saul voise să-i ucidă, în râvna lui pentru copiii lui Israel şi Iuda.)
- 3 David a zis gabaoniţilor: „Ce pot face eu pentru voi şi cu se să fac ispăşire, ca să binecuvântaţi moştenirea Domnului?”
- 4 Gabaoniţii i-au răspuns: „Nu voim nici argint, nici aur de la Saul şi de la casa lui şi nici nu este treaba noastră să omorâm pe cineva din Israel.” Şi împăratul a zis: „Ce voiţi dar să vă fac?”
- 5 Ei au răspuns împăratului: „Fiindcă omul acela ne-a slăbit şi îşi pusese de gând să ne nimicească, pentru ca să ne facă să pierim din tot ţinutul lui Israel,
- 6 să ni se dea şapte bărbaţi din fiii lui şi-i vom spânzura înaintea Domnului, la Ghibea lui Saul, alesul Domnului.” Şi împăratul a zis: „Vi-i voi da.”
- 7 Împăratul a cruţat pe Mefiboşet, fiul lui Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, pentru jurământul pe care-l făcuseră între ei, înaintea Domnului, David şi Ionatan, fiul lui Saul.
- 8 Dar împăratul a luat pe cei doi fii pe care-i născuse lui Saul Riţpa, fata lui Aiia, şi anume: Armoni şi Mefiboşet, şi pe cei cinci fii pe care-i născuse Merab, fata lui Saul, lui Adriel din Mehola, fiul lui Barzilai;
- 9 i-a dat în mâinile gabaoniţilor, care i-au spânzurat pe munte, înaintea Domnului. Toţi cei şapte au pierit împreună; au fost omorâţi în cele dintâi zile ale seceratului, la începutul seceratului orzurilor.
- 10 Riţpa, fata lui Aiia, a luat un sac şi l-a întins sub ea, peste stâncă, de la începutul seceratului până când a căzut peste ei ploaie din cer, şi a oprit păsările cerului să se apropie de ei în timpul zilei şi fiarele câmpului, în timpul nopţii.
- 11 Au înştiinţat pe David despre ce făcuse Riţpa, fata lui Aiia, ţiitoarea lui Saul.
- 12 Şi David s-a dus şi a luat oasele lui Saul şi oasele fiului său Ionatan de la locuitorii din Iabesul Galaadului, care le luaseră din piaţa Bet-Şan, unde îi spânzuraseră filistenii când au bătut pe Saul la Ghilboa.
- 13 A luat de acolo oasele lui Saul şi oasele fiului său Ionatan şi s-au strâns şi oasele celor ce fuseseră spânzuraţi.
- 14 Au îngropat oasele lui Saul şi ale fiului său Ionatan în ţara lui Beniamin, la Ţela, în mormântul lui Chis, tatăl lui Saul. Şi au făcut tot ce poruncise împăratul. După aceea, Dumnezeu a fost potolit faţă de ţară.
- 15 Filistenii au pornit iarăşi cu război împotriva lui Israel. David s-a pogorât cu slujitorii lui şi a luptat împotriva filistenilor. David era obosit.
- 16 Şi Işbi-Benob, unul din copiii lui Rafa, a voit să omoare pe David; avea o suliţă în greutate de trei sute de sicli de aramă şi era încins cu o sabie nouă.
- 17 Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei, a venit în ajutorul lui David, a lovit pe filistean şi l-a omorât. Atunci, oamenii lui David i-au jurat zicând: „Să nu mai ieşi cu noi la luptă, ca să nu stingi lumina lui Israel”.
- 18 După aceea, a mai fost o bătălie la Gob cu filistenii. Atunci, Sibecai, Huşatitul, a omorât pe Saf, care era unul din copiii lui Rafa.
- 19 A mai fost o bătălie la Gob cu filistenii. Şi Elhanan, fiul lui Iaare-Oreghim din Betleem, a omorât pe Goliat din Gat, care avea o suliţă al cărei mâner era ca sulul de ţesut.
- 20 A mai fost o bătălie la Gat. Acolo era un om de statură înaltă, care avea şase degete la fiecare mână şi la fiecare picior, în total douăzeci şi patru, şi care se trăgea tot din Rafa.
- 21 El a batjocorit pe Israel, şi Ionatan, fiul lui Şimea, fratele lui David, l-a omorât.
- 22 Aceşti patru oameni erau copiii lui Rafa născuţi la Gat. Au pierit ucişi de mâna lui David şi de mâna slujitorilor lui.
