- 1 Men de reiste igjennem Amphipolis og Apollonia og kom til Thessalonika, hvor Jøderne havde en Synagoge.
- 2 Men Paulus gik ind til dem, som han pleiede, og talede paa tre Sabbater med dem af Skrifterne.
- 3 Og han udlagde og forklarede, at det burde Christus at lide og opstaae fra de Døde, og sagde: denne Jesus, som jeg forkynder Eder, er den Christus.
- 4 Og Nogle iblandt dem bleve overbeviste og holdt sig til Paulus og Silas, en stor Mængde af andægtige Græker, og ikke faa af de fornemste Kvinder.
- 5 Men de vantroe Jøder bleve nidkjære og toge nogle slette Mennesker af Lediggængere til sig, gjorde et Opløb og oprørte Staden; og de stormede mod Jasons Huus og søgte at føre dem for Folket.
- 6 Men der de ikke fandt dem, trak de Jason og nogle Brødre for Stadens Øvrighed og raabte: disse, som oprøre dem hele Verden, ere og komne hid;
- 7 dem haver Jason taget ind til sig; og alle disse handle imod Keiserens Befalinger, og sige en Anden at være Konge, nemlig Jesus.
- 8 Og de bragte Mængden og Stadens Øvrighed, som hørte det, i Forvirring.
- 9 Og de lode Jason og de Andre stille Borgen for sig og gave dem løs.
- 10 Men Brødrene udsendte strax om Natten baade Paulus og Silas til Beroea; og der de vare komne derhen, gik de i Jødernes Synagoge.
- 11 Men disse vare mere veltænkende end de i Thessalonika, de annammede Ord med al Redebonhed, og ransagede dagligen i Skrifterne, om disse Ting havde sig saaledes.
- 12 Saa troede da mange af dem, og af de fornemme grækiske Kvinder og Mænd ikke faa.
- 13 Men der Jøderne af Thessalonika fik at vide, at Guds Ord blev og forkyndet af Paulus i Beroea, kom de og derhen og satte Folket i Bevægelse.
- 14 Men da sendte Brødrene strax Paulus bort og lode ham reise mod Havet; men baade Silas og Timotheus bleve der tilbage.
- 15 Men de, som ledsagede Paulus, førte ham indtil Athenen; og der de havde faaet Befaling til Silas og Timotheus, at de med det Snareste skulde komme til ham, droge de bort.
- 16 Men der Paulus forventede dem i Athenen, harmedes hans Aand heftig i ham, der han saae Staden at være saa afgudisk.
- 17 Derfor talede ham i Synagogen til Jøderne og de Gudfrygtige, og paa Torvet hver Dag til dem, som han traf paa.
- 18 Men nogle af de epikuræiske og stoiske Philosopher indlode sig med ham; og nogle sagde: hvad vil denne Ordgyder sige? men andre: det synes, han vil forkynde fremmede Guder; fordi han forkyndte dem Jesus og Opstandelsen.
- 19 Og de toge ham og førte ham op for det øverste Raad og sagde: kunne vi faae at vide, hvad denne er for en ny Lærdom, som du taler?
- 20 Thi du bringer os nogle fremmede Ting for Øren; derfor ville vi vide, hvad dette skal være.
- 21 (Men alle Athenienser og de Fremmede, som opholdt sig der, gave sig ikke af med Andet, end at sige eller høre Nyt).
- 22 Men Paulus stod midt i Raadet og sagde: I atheniensiske Mænd! jeg seer, at I i alle Maader ere omhyggelige for Eders Gudsdyrkelse.
- 23 Thi der jeg gik omkring og betragtede Eders Helligdomme, fandt jeg og et Alter, paa hvilket var skrevet: for en ukjendt Gud. Denne nu, som I ukendt dyrke, denne forkynder jeg Eder.
- 24 Gud, som haver gjort Verden og alle Ting, som ere derudi, han som er Himmelens og Jordens Herre, boer ikke i Templer, gjorte med Hænder,
- 25 han tjenes og ikke af Menneskers Hænder, som den, der haver Noget behov, efterdi han selv giver Alle Liv og Aande og alle Ting.
- 26 Og han haver gjort, at al Menneskens Slægt boer paa den ganske Jordens Kreds af eet Blod, og haver bestemt dem forordnede Tider, og visse Grændser for deres Bolig,
- 27 at de skulde søge Herren, og de dog kunde føle og finde ham, enddog han er sandelig ikke langt fra enhver af os;
- 28 thi i ham leve og røres og ere vi, som og nogle af Eders Digtere have sagt: vi ere jo og hans Slægt.
- 29 Efterdi vi da ere Guds Slægt, skulle vi ikke mene, at Guddommen er lig Guld eller Sølv eller Steen, formet til et Billede ved Menneskens Kunst og Paafund.
- 30 Dog med Vankundighedens Tider haver Gud baaret over, men byder nu alle Mennesker allevegne at omvende sig.

- 31 Thi han haver sat en Dag, paa hvilken han vil dømme Jorderige med Retfærdighed, ved en Mand, hvilken han haver beskikket dertil, og gjort det beviisligt for Alle, idet han opreiste ham fra de Døde.
- 32 Men der de hørte om de Dødes Opstandelse, spottede Nogle; men Andre sagde: vi ville atter høre dig om dette.
- 33 Og saaledes gik Paulus ud fra dem.
- 34 Men nogle Mænd hængte fast ved ham og troede; iblandt hvilke ogsaa var Dionysius den Areopagiter, og en Kvinde ved Navn Damaris, og Andre med dem.
