- 1 در سرزمین عوص مردی زندگی می کرد به نام ایوب. او یک شخص بی عیب و راستکار بود. از خدا می ترسید و از گناه دوری می کرد.
- 2 او دارای هفت پسر و سه دختر بود
- 3 و هفت هزار گوسفند، سه هزار شتر، یکهزار رأس گاو، پنجصد خر و همچنین خادمان زیادی داشت. او ثروتمندترین مرد آن نواحی بشمار می رفت.
- 4 هر یک از پسران ایوب به نوبت در خانۀ خود جشن برپا می کرد. آن ها خواهران خود را هم دعوت می نمودند که در جشن شان شرکت کنند.
- 5 بعد از ختم جشن، ایوب صبح وقت بر می خاست و برای طهارت فرزندان خود قربانی تقدیم می کرد. او این کار را بخاطری می کرد که اگر فرزندانش سهواً در برابر خدا گناهی کرده باشند، گناه شان بخشیده شود.
- 6 روزی که فرشتگان در حضور خداوند جمع شده بودند، شیطان هم همراه شان بود.
- 7 خداوند از شیطان پرسید: «تو از کجا آمدی؟» شیطان جواب داد: «به دور زمین می گشتم و سیاحت می کردم.»
- 8 خداوند از او پرسید: «آیا بندۀ من ایوب را دیدی؟ در تمام روی زمین کسی مانند او پیدا نمی شود. او یک شخص راستکار و بی عیب است. از من می ترسد و هیچ گونه خطائی از او سر نمی زند.»
- 9 شیطان گفت: «اگر خدا ترسی برای ایوب فایده ای نمی داشت، این کار را نمی کرد.
- 10 تو همیشه و از هر رهگذر از او و خانواده اش حمایت کرده و به دارائی، اموال و هر کاری که می کند برکت بخشیده ای.
- 11 حالا به طور آزمایش، دارائی اش را از او بگیر و آنوقت خواهی دید که آشکارا تو را ترک خواهد گفت!»
- 12 خداوند فرمود: «بسیار خوب، همه دارائی اش را در اختیار تو می گذارم. برو و هر کاری که می خواهی بکن، اما به خودش ضرری نرسان!» پس شیطان از حضور خداوند بیرون رفت.
- 13 یک روز، هنگامی که پسران و دختران ایوب در خانۀ برادر بزرگ شان مهمان بودند،
- 14 قاصدی پیش ایوب آمد و به او گفت: «گاوهایت قلبه می کردند و خرهایت در کنار آن ها می چریدند
- 15 که ناگهان سابیان حمله کردند. تمام حیوانات را با خود بردند و خادمان ترا کشتند. تنها من زنده مانده فرار کردم و آمدم تا ترا از ماجرا آگاه سازم.»
- 16 حرف قاصد هنوز تمام نشده بود که شخص دیگری آمد و گفت: «آتش خدا از آسمان فرود آمد و رمه و همه خادمانت را از بین برد. فقط من سالم ماندم و آمدم تا به تو خبر بدهم.»
- 17 این شخص هنوز حرف می زد که قاصد دیگری از راه رسید و گفت: «سه دستۀ کلدانیان بر ما حمله آوردند و شترهایت را ربودند و خادمانت را با شمشیر کشتند. تنها من توانستم که فرار نموده بیایم و ترا خبر کنم.»
- 18 پیش از آنکه این شخص سخنان خود را تمام کند، قاصد چهارم آمد و گفت: «پسران و دخترانت در خانۀ برادر بزرگ شان مهمان بودند
- 19 که دفعتاً باد شدیدی از جانب بیابان وزید، خانه را بر سر فرزندانت خراب کرد و همه مردند. فقط من زنده ماندم و آمدم تا ترا آگاه کنم.»
- 20 آنگاه ایوب برخاست، لباس خود را پاره کرد، سر خود را تراشید رو به خاک به سجده افتاد
- 21 و گفت: «من از رَحِم مادر برهنه به دنیا آمدم و برهنه هم از جهان می روم. خداوند داد و خداوند پس گرفت. نام خداوند متبارک باد!»
- 22 در تمام این احوال، باز هم ایوب گناه نورزید و خدا را ناسزا نگفت.
