- 1 ای برادران، شما از شریعت اطلاع دارید و می دانید که انسان فقط تا زمانی که زنده است، مجبور به اطاعت از شریعت است.
  We are bound to our spouse for life, only death can separate us and then we may marry again but only with a unmarried or widowed person. If we marry someone else while our spouse is alive, we are adulterers and adulteresses.
- 2 مثلاً یک زن شوهردار تا وقتی شوهرش زنده است، شرعاً به او تعلق دارد. اما اگر شوهر او بمیرد، دیگر آن زن از قانونی که او را به شوهرش مقید می ساخت، آزاد است.
- 3 از این جهت اگر آن زن در زمان زندگی شوهرش با مرد دیگر زندگی کند، زناکار خوانده خواهد شد. اما اگر شوهرش بمیرد، دیگر این قانون شامل حال او نیست و چنانچه با مرد دیگری ازدواج کند، مرتکب زنا نمی شود.
- 4 ای برادران، شما نیز در همین وضع هستید. شما چون جزئی از بدن مسیح هستید، نسبت به شریعت مرده اید و اکنون به آن کسی که پس از مرگ زنده شد تعلق دارید، تا در نتیجه برای خدا ثمری بیاوریم.
- 5 زیرا هنگامی که ما گرفتار طبیعت نفسانی بودیم، شهوات گناه که به وسیلۀ شریعت برانگیخته شده بود در وجود ما کار می کرد و موجب مرگ ما می شد.
- 6 اما اکنون از قید شریعت آزاد شده ایم زیرا نسبت به آنچه که ما را در بردگی نگاه می داشت مرده ایم تا به شکل نو یعنی به وسیلۀ روح القدس خدا را خدمت کنیم، نه مانند گذشته که از قوانین نوشته شده اطاعت می کردیم.
- 7 پس چه بگوئیم؟ آیا شریعت گناهکار است؟ هرگز نه! اگر شریعت نمی بود من گناه را نمی شناختم. مثلاً اگر شریعت نگفته بود: «طمع نکن»، من هرگز نمی دانستم طمع کردن چیست.
- 8 گناه با استفاده از این قانون هر نوع طمع کاری را در زندگی من پدید آورد. زیرا گناه بدون شریعت مثل جسد بی جان است.
- 9 خود من زمانی بی خبر از شریعت زنده بودم، اما همین که این حکم شریعت آمد، گناه جان تازه ای گرفت
- 10 و من مُردم و شریعت که قرار بود زندگی را به وجود بیآورد، در مورد من مرگ به بار آورد.
- 11 زیرا گناه با استفاده از آن حکم شریعت مرا فریب داده کُشت.
- 12 بنابراین شریعت به خودی خود مقدس است و تمام احکام آن مقدس و عادلانه و نیکوست.
- 13 آیا مقصد این است که چیزی نیکو موجب مرگ من شد؟ هرگز نه! گناه این کار را کرد تا ذات واقعی آن آشکار شود. گناه با استفاده از یک چیز نیکو موجب مرگ من شد تا به وسیلۀ این حکم شریعت، پستی و شرارت بی حد گناه معلوم گردد.
- 14 ما می دانیم که شریعت روحانی است؛ اما من نفسانی هستم و مانند برده ای به گناه فروخته شده ام.
- 15 نمی دانم چکار می کنم؛ زیرا آنچه را که دلم می خواهد انجام نمی دهم، بلکه بر خلاف، چیزی را که از آن نفرت دارم به عمل می آورم.
- 16 وقتی کاری می کنم که نمی خواهم بکنم، این نشان می دهد که من قبول می کنم که شریعت درست است.
- 17 پس در واقع من آن کسی که این عمل را انجام می دهد نیستم؛ بلکه این گناه است که در من به سر می برد.
- 18 می دانم که در من یعنی در طبیعت نفسانی من جائی برای نیکوئی نیست، زیرا اگرچه خواهش به نیکی کردن در من هست ولی قدرت انجام آن را ندارم.
- 19 آن نیکی ای را که می خواهم، انجام نمی دهم، بلکه کاری بدی را که نمی خواهم، به عمل می آورم.
- 20 اگر کاری را که نمی خواهم، انجام می دهم، دیگر کنندۀ آن کار من نیستم. بلکه گناه است که در من بسر می برد.
- 21 پس به این قاعدۀ کلی پی می برم که: هر وقت می خواهم کاری نیکو انجام دهم، فقط شرارت از من سر می زند.
- 22 باطناً از شریعت خدا لذت می برم.
- 23 ولی می بینم قانون دیگری بر بدن من حاکم است، که با قانون حاکم بر ذهن من جنگ می کند و مرا اسیر قانون گناه می سازد یعنی اعضای بدن مرا تابع خود نموده است.
- 24 من چه آدم بدبختی هستم! این بدن، مرا به سوی مرگ می کشاند. چه کسی می تواند مرا از دست آن آزاد سازد؟
- 25 خدا را به وسیلۀ خداوند ما عیسی مسیح شکر می کنم که چنین کاری را کرده است. خلاصه در حالی که طبیعت نفسانی من بندۀ گناه است، با عقل خود شریعت خدا را بندگی می کنم.
