- 1 اسحاق یعقوب را فرا خواند. با او احوالپرسی کرد و گفت: «با دختران کنعانی عروسی نکن.
- 2 به بین النهرین به خانۀ پدر کلانت بِتوئیل برو و با یکی از دختر های مامای خود، لابان عروسی کن.
- 3 تا خدای قادر مطلق عروسی تو را برکت دهد و فرزندان زیاد به تو بدهد. بنابراین، تو پدر ملت های بسیار می شوی.
- 4 تا خدا همان طوری که ابراهیم را برکت داد، تو و فرزندان ترا نیز برکت دهد و مالک این سرزمینی که در آن زندگی می کنی و خدا آنرا به ابراهیم داده است، بشوی.»
- 5 اسحاق یعقوب را به بین النهرین به نزد لابان پسر بِتوئیل ارامی فرستاد. لابان برادر ربکا، مادر یعقوب و عیسو، بود.
- 6 عیسو فهمید که اسحاق برای یعقوب دعای برکت خوانده و او را به بین النهرین فرستاده است تا برای خود زن بگیرد. او همچنین فهمید، وقتی اسحاق برای یعقوب دعای برکت می خواند به او امر کرد که با دختران کنعانی عروسی نکند.
- 7 او اطلاع داشت که یعقوب امر پدر و مادر خود را اطاعت کرده و به بین النهرین رفته است.
- 8 او می دانست که پدرش از زنان کنعانی خوشش نمی آید.
- 9 پس به نزد اسماعیل. پسر ابراهیم رفت و با محلت دختر اسماعیل که خواهر نبایوت بود ازدواج کرد.
- 10 یعقوب بئرشِبع را ترک کرد و به طرف حَران رفت.
- 11 هنگام غروب آفتاب به محلی رسید. همانجا سنگی را زیر سر خود گذاشت و خوابید.
- 12 در خواب دید: زینه ای در آنجا است که یک سرش بر زمین و سر دیگرش در آسمان است و فرشتگان از آن بالا و پائین می روند
- 13 و خداوند در کنار آن ایستاده و می گوید: «من هستم خداوند، خدای ابراهیم و اسحاق. من این زمینی را که روی آن خوابیده ای به تو و فرزندان تو می دهم.
- 14 نسل تو مانند غبار زمین زیاد می شود. آن ها قلمرو خود را از هر طرف توسعه می دهند. من بوسیلۀ تو و فرزندان تو، همۀ ملت ها را برکت می دهم.
- 15 به خاطر داشته باش که من با تو می باشم و هر جا بروی تو را محافظت می کنم و تو را به این سرزمین باز می آورم. تو را ترک نمی کنم تا همه چیزهای را که به تو وعده داده ام به انجام رسانم.»
- 16 یعقوب از خواب بیدار شد و گفت: «خداوند در اینجا است. او در این مکان است و من این را نمی دانستم.»
- 17 او ترسید و گفت: «این چه جای ترسناکی است. اینجا باید خانۀ خدا باشد. اینجا دروازۀ آسمان است.»
- 18 یعقوب روز بعد، صبح وقت برخاست و سنگی را که زیر سر خود گذاشته بود برداشت و آنرا به عنوان یک ستون یاد بود در آنجا گذاشت. بر روی آن روغن ریخت تا به این وسیله آنرا برای خدا وقف کند.
- 19 او آن شهر را که تا آن موقع به لوز مشهور بود، بیت ئیل (یعنی خانۀ خدا) نامید.
- 20 بعد از آن یعقوب برای خداوند نذر گرفت و گفت: «اگر تو با من باشی و مرا در این سفر محافظت نمائی، به من خوراک و لباس بدهی
- 21 و من به سلامتی به خانۀ پدرم باز گردم، تو خدای من می باشی.
- 22 این ستون یاد بودی که برپا کرده ام محل پرستش تو می باشد و هر چه به من داده ای ده یک آنرا به تو می دهم.»
