1 Maccabees 12
- 1 Toen Jonatan zag, dat het ogenblik gunstig was, wees hij enkele mannen aan en zond hen naar Rome, om de vriendschapsbetrekkingen met de Romeinen te versterken en te vernieuwen.
- 2 Ook aan de Spartanen en andere landen zond hij brieven, die hetzelfde beoogden.
- 3 Zij vertrokken dus naar Rome, traden daar de Senaat binnen, en spraken: De hogepriester Jonatan en het volk der Joden hebben ons gezonden, om de vriendschappelijke betrekkingen en het bondgenootschap onder de vroegere voorwaarden te laten vernieuwen.
- 4 Hierop gaf men hun brieven mee voor de verschillende plaatselijke overheden met het verzoek, hun een vrijgeleide naar het land Juda te verstrekken.
- 5 Dit is het afschrift van de brief, die Jonatan aan de Spartanen schreef:
- 6 De hogepriester Jonatan, de hoge raad van het volk, de priesters en het overige volk der Joden, aan hun broeders de Spartanen: heil!
- 7 Reeds vroeger heeft de hogepriester Onias een brief ontvangen van Areios, een van uw koningen, waarin gezegd wordt, dat gij onze broeders zijt, zoals het ingesloten afschrift bewijst.
- 8 Onias heeft den gezant eervol ontvangen en aanvaardde de brief, waarin uitdrukkelijk over een bondgenootschap en vriendschapsbetrekkingen werd gesproken.
- 9 Ofschoon geen noodzaak er ons toe dwingt, daar wij onze troost putten uit de heilige boeken, die wij bezitten
- 10 willen wij toch, om niet van u te vervreemden, een poging doen, om door middel van een gezantschap de wederzijdse banden van broeders en bondgenoten te vernieuwen. Want het is reeds lang geleden, dat gij uw laatste gezantschap naar ons hebt afgevaardigd.
- 11 Wij van onze kant laten nooit een gelegenheid voorbijgaan, om op feesten en andere plechtige dagen bij onze offers en gebeden aan u te denken; want het is een heilige plicht, dat broeders elkander indachtig zijn.
- 12 Ook verheugen wij ons over de roem, die u ten deel is gevallen.
- 13 En wat ons zelf betreft: wij hebben ons temidden van veel verdrukkingen en oorlogen bevonden, omdat de koningen uit onze omgeving tegen ons te velde trokken.
- 14 In deze strijd echter hebben wij u, noch een van onze andere bondgenoten en vrienden willen lastig vallen.
- 15 Want wij hebben de hulp van de Hemel, die ons bijstaat; hierdoor werden wij van onze vijanden verlost, en werden onze tegenstanders vernederd.
- 16 Nu hebben wij Noeménius, den zoon van Antiochus, en Antipater, den zoon van Jáson, uitgekozen en hen naar de Romeinen gezonden, om de vroegere vriendschapsbetrekkingen en het bondgenootschap met hen te vernieuwen.
- 17 Tegelijkertijd droegen wij hun op, ook naar u te reizen, onze groeten aan u over te brengen en u onze brief te overhandigen, om onze vriendschap te vernieuwen.
- 18 Gij zoudt ons ten zeerste verplichten, ons hierop een antwoord te zenden.
- 19 En dit is het afschrift van de brief, die aan Onias werd gezonden:
- 20 Areios, koning der Spartanen, aan Onias den hogepriester: heil!
- 21 Uit een geschrift over de Spartanen en de Joden is komen vast te staan, dat zij broeders zijn en beiden van Abraham afstammen.
- 22 Nu ons dit bekend is geworden, zoudt gij ons zeer verplichten, ons te berichten, hoe het u gaat.
- 23 Wij van onze kant stellen u voor: Uw vee en uw have is als van ons, en het onze van u. Wij hebben opdracht gegeven u hiervan in kennis te stellen.
- 24 Toen Jonatan hoorde, dat de aanvoerders van Demétrius met een veel groter leger dan vroeger waren teruggekomen, om hem te bestrijden
- 25 verliet hij Jerusalem en trok hun in het gebied van Chamat tegemoet; want hij wilde hun de kans niet geven, zijn land binnen te rukken.
- 26 Hij zond spionnen naar hun kamp, die met het bericht terugkwamen, dat men voorbereidingen trof, om hen des nachts te overvallen.
- 27 Daarom gaf Jonatan bij zonsondergang zijn mannen bevel, wakker en gewapend te blijven, en de hele nacht klaar te staan voor het gevecht; tevens zette hij rondom het kamp wachtposten uit.
- 28 Maar toen de vijanden hoorden, dat Jonatan en zijn mannen strijdvaardig stonden, werden zij door vrees overmand en verloren de moed; zij trokken weg, maar staken eerst in hun kamp de wachtvuren aan.
- 29 Jonatan en zijn mannen, die deze vuren zagen branden, bemerkten er dus niets van, vóór het morgen werd.
- 30 Toen zette Jonatan ze wel achterna, maar kon ze niet meer inhalen, omdat zij reeds de rivier de Eleúterus waren overgetrokken.
- 31 Nu trok Jonatan naar de Arabieren, die men Zabadeërs noemde; hij versloeg hen en plunderde ze uit.
- 32 Vandaar rukte hij verder, ging naar Damascus en doorkruiste het hele gebied.
- 33 Ook Sjimon was uitgerukt en tot Asjkalon en de naastbijgelegen vestingen doorgedrongen. Vandaar trok hij naar Jóppe en nam de stad in
- 34 omdat hij gehoord had, dat men de vesting aan de aanhangers van Demétrius wilde uitleveren. Hij liet er ter bewaking een bezetting achter.
- 35 Toen Jonatan was teruggekeerd, riep hij de oudsten van het volk bijeen, en maakte met hen het besluit, vestingen in Judea te bouwen
- 36 de muren van Jerusalem te verhogen en tussen de burcht en de stad een hoge muur op te trekken, om de burcht volslagen van de stad af te sluiten, en hem zó te versperren, dat alle koop en verkoop zou worden afgesneden.
- 37 Zij sloegen dus de handen ineen voor de bouw van de stad; en daar een gedeelte van de muur bij de beek in het oosten was ingestort, herstelden zij die en noemden hem Kafenáta.
- 38 Sjimon werkte intussen aan de bouw en de versterking van Chadid in de Sjefela, en voorzag het van poorten en grendels.
- 39 Intussen had Trúfon plannen beraamd, om koning van Azië te worden, zich de kroon op het hoofd te zetten en Antiochus uit de weg te ruimen.
- 40 Daar hij echter vreesde dat Jonatan dit niet zou toelaten en hem zou tegenwerken, zocht hij naar een middel, om hem gevangen te nemen en te doden. Hij rukte dus uit, en ging naar Bet-Sjan.
- 41 Maar Jonatan trok met veertigduizend krijgshaftige soldaten tegen hem op, en bereikte Bet-Sjan eveneens.
- 42 Toen Trúfon zag, dat hij met een groot leger gekomen was, schrok hij ervoor terug, zich aan hem te vergrijpen.
- 43 Daarna ontving hij hem met hoge eerbewijzen, stelde hem voor aan al zijn vertrouwelingen, gaf hem geschenken, en beval zijn vertrouwelingen en zijn troepen, Jonatan te gehoorzamen juist als hemzelf.
- 44 Daarna sprak hij tot Jonatan: Waarom hebt ge heel dit leger afgetobd, daar we toch geen van beiden het plan hebben, oorlog te maken?
- 45 Stuur ze naar huis terug en kies u een paar mannen uit, om u te begeleiden, en ga met mij mee naar Ptolemáis. Daar zal ik de stad met de andere vestingen, de overige troepen en alle ambtenaren aan u overdragen. Dan trek ik mij terug en ga weg; want daarvoor alleen ben ik gekomen.
- 46 Jonatan vertrouwde hem en deed, wat hij hem had gezegd. Hij zond de troepen weg, die naar het land Juda teruggingen.
- 47 Slechts drieduizend man hield hij bij zich, waarvan hij er nog tweeduizend naar Galilea zond, zodat er slechts duizend met hem meegingen.
- 48 Maar nauwelijks was Jonatan in Ptolemáis aangekomen, of de inwoners sloten de poorten, namen hem gevangen en joegen al zijn begeleiders over de kling.
- 49 Bovendien zond Trúfon voetvolk en ruiters naar Galilea en naar de grote vlakte, om de gehele aanhang van Jonatan uit de weg te ruimen.
- 50 Daar dezen echter hadden vernomen dat Jonatan en de zijnen zouden gevangen genomen zijn en vermoord, hitsten zij elkander op, en rukten in gesloten gelederen vooruit, gereed om te vechten.
- 51 Toen de achtervolgers dus zagen, dat zij op leven en dood wilden strijden, keerden ze terug.
- 52 Zo konden zij allen behouden het land Juda bereiken, waar zij, met grote angst in het hart, Jonatan en zijn mannen beweenden. Ook Israël hield een grote dodenklacht.
- 53 Maar alle heidenen uit de omtrek stelden nu pogingen in het werk, om hen te verdelgen. Want ze zeiden: Ze hebben geen enkelen aanvoerder meer, die hen helpt. Nu moeten wij hen bestrijden, en zelfs hun nagedachtenis bij de mensen verdelgen.

Basic Hash Usage Explained
At getBible, we've established a robust system to keep our API synchronized with the Crosswire project's modules. Let me explain how this integration works in simple terms.
We source our Bible text directly from the Crosswire modules. To monitor any updates, we generate "hash values" for each chapter, book, and translation. These hash values serve as unique identifiers that change only when the underlying content changes, thereby ensuring a tight integration between getBible and the Crosswire modules.
Every month, an automated process runs for approximately three hours. During this window, we fetch the latest Bible text from the Crosswire modules. Subsequently, we compare the new hash values and the text with the previous ones. Any detected changes trigger updates to both our official getBible hash repository and the Bible API for all affected translations. This system has been operating seamlessly for several years.
Once the updates are complete, any application utilizing our Bible API should monitor the hash values at the chapter, book, or translation level. Spotting a change in these values indicates that they should update their respective systems.
Hash values can change due to various reasons, including textual corrections like adding omitted verses, rectifying spelling errors, or addressing any discrepancies flagged by the publishers maintaining the modules at Crosswire.
The Crosswire initiative, also known as the SWORD Project, is the "source of truth" for getBible. Any modifications in the Crosswire modules get reflected in our API within days, ensuring our users access the most precise and current Bible text. We pledge to uphold this standard as long as getBible exists and our build scripts remain operational.
