1 Maccabees 2
- 1 In die dagen trad Mattatias op, een zoon van Johannes en kleinzoon van Sjimon. Hij was priester uit het geslacht van Jojarib te Jerusalem, maar woonde in Modin.
- 2 Hij had vijf zonen: Johannes met de bijnaam Gaddi
- 3 Sjimon met de bijnaam Tassi
- 4 Judas die Makkabeër genoemd werd
- 5 Elazar met de bijnaam Hauran, en Jonatan, die ook Affoes heette.
- 6 Toen hij nu de gruwelen in Juda en Jerusalem aanschouwde
- 7 sprak hij: Wee mij! Waartoe werd ik geboren, Nu ik de ondergang van mijn volk aanschouw, de ruïne der heilige stad; Nu ik machteloos zit, terwijl zij aan den vijand wordt overgeleverd En het heiligdom in de handen van vreemden valt.
- 8 Haar tempel werd als een onteerde man, Nu haar heerlijke vaten als buit zijn geroofd.
- 9 Haar kinderen werden in haar straten vermoord, Haar jongemannen door het vijandig zwaard.
- 10 Is er nog een volk, dat niet over haar heerste, En dat geen beslag heeft gelegd op een deel van de buit?
- 11 Al haar sieraden zijn haar ontnomen; Die vroeger vrij was, werd een slavin.
- 12 Ziet eens, hoe ons heiligdom, ons juweel, Hoe onze trots is verwoest, En hoe de heidenen het hebben onteerd!
- 13 Waartoe leven wij nog?
- 14 Mattatias en zijn zonen scheurden hun klederen, hulden zich in boetezakken en waren diep bedroefd.
- 15 Op zekere dag verschenen er ook koninklijke beambten in Modin, om de stad tot afval en tot offeren te dwingen.
- 16 Vele Israëlieten liepen naar hen over, maar Mattatias en zijn zonen bleven standvastig.
- 17 Daarom spraken de koninklijke beambten Mattatias hierover aan, en zeiden tot hem: In deze stad zijt gij een der leiders; ge staat hoog in aanzien en hebt grote invloed; bovendien staan uw zonen en uw familie achter u.
- 18 Treed gij dus het eerst naar voren, en doe wat de koning beveelt; alle volken hebben het reeds gedaan, en de mannen uit Juda met die in Jerusalem zijn achtergebleven, eveneens. Dan zult gij en uw zonen tot de vrienden van den koning worden gerekend, en goud, zilver en veel andere eregeschenken ontvangen.
- 19 Maar Mattatias antwoordde met luider stem: Al gehoorzamen hem alle volken in het rijksgebied van den koning, al valt iedereen van de godsdienst zijner vaderen af en voegt zich naar het bevel van den koning
- 20 ik, mijn zonen en mijn familie blijven trouw aan het verbond onzer vaderen!
- 21 Wij denken er niet aan, de wet te verzaken en haar geboden.
- 22 Nooit gehoorzamen wij aan het bevel van den koning; van onze godsdienst wijken we niet af, niet rechts en niet links!
- 23 Maar nauwelijks had hij uitgesproken, of er trad een jood voor aller ogen naar voren, om volgens het bevel van den koning een offer te brengen op het altaar van Modin.
- 24 Toen Mattatias dit zag, ontstak hij in heilige woede, en heel zijn wezen kwam in opstand. Hij gaf de vrije loop aan zijn rechtmatige toorn, sprong vooruit, en sloeg hem neer bij het altaar.
- 25 Tegelijkertijd doodde hij den koninklijken beambte, die het offer had doorgedreven, en vernielde het altaar.
- 26 Zo kwam hij op voor de wet, evenals Pinechas tegen Zimri, den zoon van Sjalloem.
- 27 Nu liet Mattatias met luider stem in de stad afkondigen: Iedereen die het opneemt voor de wet en trouw blijft aan het verbond, volge mij!
- 28 Daarop vluchtte hij met zijn zonen naar het gebergte, en ze lieten have en goed in de stad.
- 29 Toen trokken er velen, die naar recht en gerechtigheid snakten, naar de woestijn, en bleven daar wonen
- 30 met vrouwen, kinderen en vee, omdat de nood te hoog was geklommen.
- 31 Maar zodra de koninklijke beambte en de bezetting, die zich te Jerusalem in de Davidstad ophield, te weten waren gekomen, dat velen van hen, die het koninklijk bevel in de wind hadden geslagen, naar de holen in de woestijn waren gevlucht
- 32 trokken ze hen met een groot leger achterna, haalden hen in en omsingelden hen. Doch eerst op de sabbat gingen ze tot de aanval over
- 33 en riepen hun toe: Nu is het genoeg; komt er uit! Als gij u onderwerpt aan het bevel van den koning, blijft gij in leven!
- 34 Men riep hun terug: Wij komen er niet uit; wij onderwerpen ons niet aan het bevel van den koning, en willen nog minder de sabbat schenden.
- 35 Nu vielen ze hen onmiddellijk aan.
- 36 Maar de anderen verweerden zich niet; ze wierpen geen enkele steen naar hen, en sloten zelfs de holen niet af.
- 37 Ze riepen: We willen allen sterven met een rein geweten! Hemel en aarde zijn onze getuigen, dat gij ons wederrechtelijk vermoordt.
- 38 Zij vielen hen dus op sabbat aan, en ongeveer duizend mannen, vrouwen en kinderen vonden de dood met het vee.
- 39 Toen Mattatias en zijn vrienden dit vernamen, betreurden ze hen diep.
- 40 Maar ze zeiden ook tegen elkander: Wanneer wij allen doen als onze broeders, en ons leven en onze wet niet tegen de heidenen verdedigen dan zullen ze ons al heel gauw van de aarde verdelgen.
- 41 Nog diezelfde dag maakten ze dan ook het besluit: We grijpen iedereen aan, die ons aanvalt op sabbat, en laten ons niet tot den laatsten man uitmoorden, zoals onze broeders, die in de holen gedood zijn.
- 42 Nu sloot zich ook een groep chasidéen bij hen aan; het waren dappere Israëlieten, die allen met hart en ziel voor de wet opkwamen.
- 43 Ook allen, die voor de nood moesten vluchten, sloten zich bij hen aan, en versterkten hun macht.
- 44 Zo vormden zij een legerschare, en In hun verbittering sloegen zij de goddelozen neer, En de afvalligen in hun woede! De rest wist zich te redden, door naar de heidenen te vluchten.
- 45 Nu trokken Mattatias en zijn vrienden overal rond, en vernielden de altaren.
- 46 En wanneer ze ergens binnen het gebied van Israël een onbesneden kind ontdekten, lieten zij het desnoods met geweld besnijden;
- 47 die zich hooghartig verzetten, joegen ze er uit. Hun werk werd met goede uitslag bekroond:
- 48 ze beschermden de wet tegen heidenen en koningen, en gaven de goddelozen geen kans.
- 49 Toen de tijd aanbrak, dat Mattatias zou sterven, sprak hij tot zijn zonen: Nu hebben trots en geweld de overhand, Het is een tijd van verwoesting en grimmige woede.
- 50 Strijdt dus, mijn kinderen, voor de wet, En geeft uw leven voor het verbond onzer vaderen.
- 51 Denkt aan het werk van uw vaderen, Dat zij bij hun leven hebben verricht: Dan valt u grote eer ten deel, En eeuwige roem!
- 52 Toonde Abraham zich niet trouw in de beproeving, En werd hem dit niet tot gerechtigheid gerekend?
- 53 In zijn nood hield Josef vast aan de wet, En hij werd heer van Egypte.
- 54 Pinechas, onze vader, was een voorbeeld van ijver; Daarom werd hem een priesterschap voor eeuwig beloofd.
- 55 Omdat Josuël zijn plicht vervulde, Werd hij rechter in Israël.
- 56 Omdat Kaleb voor het volk heeft getuigd, Kreeg hij een erfdeel in bezit.
- 57 David ontving voor zijn vroomheid De koningstroon voor altijd.
- 58 Omdat Elias voor de wet had geijverd, Werd hij in de hemel opgenomen.
- 59 Ananja, Azarja en Misjaël werden door hun geloof Voor de vuurdood behoed.
- 60 De onschuld van Daniël Redde hem uit de muil van de leeuwen.
- 61 Zo kunt gij nagaan van geslacht tot geslacht, Dat niemand, die op God vertrouwt, het onderspit delft.
- 62 Weest dus niet bang voor het dreigen van den goddeloze; Want zijn pracht vervuilt en valt de wormen ten prooi.
- 63 Vandaag nog is hij hoog verheven, Morgen niet eens meer te vinden; Tot zijn stof keert hij terug, En met zijn plannen is het gedaan.
- 64 Dus kinderen, weest moedig, en staat pal voor de wet, Want daarin alleen ligt uw roem!
- 65 En omdat ik weet, dat uw broer Sjimon een man is met doorzicht, moet gij altijd naar hem luisteren; hij zal uw vader zijn.
- 66 Maar Judas de Makkabeër moet uw legeraanvoerder zijn, omdat hij van jongsaf een dapper held is geweest; hij moet de leiding nemen in de oorlog tegen de heidenen.
- 67 Verzamelt dan allen, die de wet onderhouden, om u heen, en neemt wraak voor uw volk.
- 68 Vergeldt de heidenen wat ze ons deden, en houdt vast aan de wet en haar geboden.
- 69 Daarna zegende hij hen, en ging tot zijn vaderen.
- 70 Hij stierf in het jaar 146, en werd in het familiegraf te Modin begraven. Heel Israël hield over hem een plechtige rouwklacht.

Basic Hash Usage Explained
At getBible, we've established a robust system to keep our API synchronized with the Crosswire project's modules. Let me explain how this integration works in simple terms.
We source our Bible text directly from the Crosswire modules. To monitor any updates, we generate "hash values" for each chapter, book, and translation. These hash values serve as unique identifiers that change only when the underlying content changes, thereby ensuring a tight integration between getBible and the Crosswire modules.
Every month, an automated process runs for approximately three hours. During this window, we fetch the latest Bible text from the Crosswire modules. Subsequently, we compare the new hash values and the text with the previous ones. Any detected changes trigger updates to both our official getBible hash repository and the Bible API for all affected translations. This system has been operating seamlessly for several years.
Once the updates are complete, any application utilizing our Bible API should monitor the hash values at the chapter, book, or translation level. Spotting a change in these values indicates that they should update their respective systems.
Hash values can change due to various reasons, including textual corrections like adding omitted verses, rectifying spelling errors, or addressing any discrepancies flagged by the publishers maintaining the modules at Crosswire.
The Crosswire initiative, also known as the SWORD Project, is the "source of truth" for getBible. Any modifications in the Crosswire modules get reflected in our API within days, ensuring our users access the most precise and current Bible text. We pledge to uphold this standard as long as getBible exists and our build scripts remain operational.
