1 Maccabees 4
- 1 Intussen had Górgias vijfduizend man voetvolk en duizend uitstekende ruiters uitgekozen, en was in de nacht uit de legerplaats opgetrokken
- 2 om het kamp der Joden te overrompelen en hen onverwacht neer te slaan; soldaten uit de burcht zouden hem de weg wijzen.
- 3 Zodra Judas dit vernam, rukte ook hij met zijn troepen op; hij wilde de koninklijke weermacht, die bij Emmaus lag, een slag toebrengen
- 4 terwijl de andere troep nog ver van de legerplaats was verspreid.
- 5 Toen Górgias dus in de nacht bij het legerkamp van Judas kwam, trof hij er niemand meer aan. Hij ging ze nu in de bergen zoeken; want hij dacht bij zichzelf: Die zijn voor ons op de vlucht!
- 6 In alle vroegte verscheen Judas in de vlakte met drieduizend man. Ze beschikten echter niet over pantsers en zwaarden, zoals ze zo gaarne hadden gehad
- 7 nu ze de zware verschansingen van het heidenkamp zagen, met ruiterij in de flank, en met geschoolde soldaten.
- 8 Maar Judas sprak tot zijn mannen: Weest niet bang voor hun overmacht en laat de moed niet zinken, als zij aan komen stormen.
- 9 Denkt er aan, hoe onze vaderen in de Rode Zee werden gered, toen Farao hen met zijn leger achtervolgde.
- 10 Roepen wij thans de Hemel aan, dat Hij Zich onzer ontfermt, het verbond onzer vaderen gedenkt, en dit leger vandaag nog voor onze ogen vernietigt.
- 11 Dan zal de hele wereld weten, dat er Iemand is, die voor Israël opkomt, en het redding brengt!
- 12 Toen nu de heidenen opkeken en hen zagen aanrukken
- 13 verlieten zij het kamp, om de strijd aan te binden. En terwijl de mannen van Judas op de trompetten bliezen
- 14 stormde men op elkander in. De heidenen werden verslagen, en namen de vlucht naar de vlakte.
- 15 Die achteraan kwamen werden over de kling gejaagd; de anderen werden vervolgd tot aan Gézer en het laagland van Judea en tot Asjdod en Jámnia. Er sneuvelden van hen ongeveer drieduizend man.
- 16 Nadat Judas met zijn leger van de achtervolging was teruggekeerd
- 17 sprak hij tot het volk: Begeert thans geen buit; er staat ons nog een veldslag te wachten.
- 18 Want Górgias staat vlak bij ons met zijn leger in de bergen. Stelt u dus tegen onze vijanden op, en slaat ze neer; dan kunt gij buit maken, zolang als gij wilt.
- 19 Terwijl Judas nog sprak, zag men een legerafdeling omzichtig uit het gebergte te voorschijn komen.
- 20 Maar die begrepen terstond, dat zij de nederlaag hadden geleden, en dat het kamp stond te branden; want uit de rook, die zichtbaar was, bleek duidelijk, wat er gebeurd was.
- 21 Bij deze ontdekking schrokken ze hevig, en daar ze zagen, dat het leger van Judas in de vlakte voor de aanval gereed stond
- 22 sloegen ze allen op de vlucht naar het land der Filistijnen.
- 23 Nu eerst trok Judas op de legerplaats af, om ze te plunderen; zij maakten veel goud en zilver buit, met violetten en echt purperen stoffen en allerlei kostbaarheden.
- 24 En op de terugtocht zongen ze de Hemel lof- en dankliederen toe: “Hij is goed, en eeuwig duurt zijn barmhartigheid!”
- 25 Want die dag was Israël een grote redding geschonken.
- 26 De heidenen, die ontkomen waren, gingen allen naar Lúsias en deelden hem alles mee, wat er gebeurd was.
- 27 Deze berichten brachten hem geheel en al van zijn stuk, omdat het met Israël niet gegaan was, zoals hij zich had voorgesteld, en er niets was terechtgekomen van wat de koning hem had opgedragen.
- 28 Daarom wierf hij het volgende jaar een leger aan van zestigduizend uitstekende soldaten en vijfduizend ruiters, om voor goed met hen af te rekenen.
- 29 Zij rukten Idumea binnen, en sloegen hun kamp op in Bet-Soer. Maar Judas trok hun met tienduizend man tegemoet.
- 30 Bij het zien van het geweldige leger begon hij te bidden, en sprak: Geprezen zijt Gij, Redder van Israël, die de aanval van den reus door de hand van uw dienaar David gebroken, en die het legerkamp der Filistijnen hebt overgeleverd in de handen van Jonatan, den zoon van Saul, en van diens wapendrager.
- 31 Breng nu ook dit leger in de hand van uw volk, zodat ze voor schande komen te staan met hun legermacht en hun ruiterij.
- 32 Jaag ze de schrik op het lijf, verlam hun brutaal geweld, verbijster hen om hun nederlaag
- 33 en sla ze neer met het zwaard van hen, die U liefhebben. Dan zullen allen, die uw Naam kennen, U met lofzangen prijzen!
- 34 Daarna stormden zij op elkander in; het werd een strijd van man tegen man, en van Lúsias' leger sneuvelden ongeveer vijfduizend soldaten.
- 35 Toen Lúsias de nederlaag van zijn eigen leger moest aanzien, en de moed zag stijgen van Judas' troepen, die vast besloten waren te leven of eervol te sterven, trok hij naar Antiochië terug. Daar wierf hij huurtroepen aan, om opnieuw Judea binnen te rukken, als het leger weer voltallig zou zijn.
- 36 Nu spraken Judas en zijn broers: Ziet, onze vijanden zijn verslagen! Laat ons nu optrekken, om het heiligdom te reinigen en het wederom in te wijden.
- 37 En het gehele leger kwam weer bijeen, en rukte op naar de Sionsberg.
- 38 Maar toen ze het heiligdom verwoest zagen liggen, het altaar ontwijd, de poorten verbrand, de voorhoven vol onkruid, opgeschoten als in een bos of op een van de bergen, en de zijvertrekken vernield:
- 39 scheurden zij hun klederen, hieven een luide jammerklacht aan, bestrooiden zich met as
- 40 wierpen zich plat ter aarde, bliezen op de alarmbazuinen en schreiden ten hemel.
- 41 Daarop wees Judas een groep soldaten aan, die de burchtbezetting in bedwang moesten houden, totdat hij de tempel had gereinigd.
- 42 Vervolgens koos hij enige priesters uit van onbesproken gedrag en trouw aan de wet;
- 43 en dezen reinigden het heiligdom, en smeten de stenen van het afgodsaltaar op een onreine plaats.
- 44 Daarna beraadslaagden zij, wat ze met het ontheiligde brandofferaltaar zouden doen;
- 45 en ze kwamen op de goede gedachte, het maar af te breken, om er later niet mee te worden bespot, omdat het door de heidenen was ontreinigd. Zij braken dus het altaar af
- 46 maar legden de stenen op een passende plaats van de tempelberg, totdat een profeet zou opstaan, die beslissen kon, wat er mee moest gebeuren.
- 47 Nu namen zij, zoals het was voorgeschreven, ongehouwen stenen en bouwden een nieuw altaar, gelijk aan het vorige.
- 48 Daarna herstelden ze het heiligdom, en wijdden het inwendige van de tempel en de voorhoven in.
- 49 Ze lieten nieuwe heilige vaten vervaardigen, brachten de kandelaar, het reukofferaltaar en de tafel in de tempel
- 50 lieten wierook branden op het reukofferaltaar, staken de lampen op de kandelaar aan, zodat ze de tempel weer verlichtten
- 51 legden de broden op de tafel en hingen de voorhangsels op. Toen ze alles, wat ze hadden ondernomen, gelukkig hadden voltooid
- 52 brachten ze in de vroege morgen van de vijf en twintigste der negende maand, dus in de maand Kislew van het jaar 148
- 53 een offer volgens de wet op het nieuw gebouwde brandofferaltaar.
- 54 Het was juist op hetzelfde uur en op dezelfde dag waarop de heidenen het hadden ontheiligd, dat het weer werd ingewijd onder lofgezang, begeleid met citers, harpen en cymbalen.
- 55 En heel het volk viel in aanbidding neer, en loofde de Hemel, die hun zoveel voorspoed had geschonken.
- 56 Acht dagen lang vierden zij het feest van de altaarwijding, waarbij ze vol blijdschap brandoffers opdroegen, en dank- en lofoffers brachten.
- 57 Ze versierden de tempelgevel met gouden kransen en schilden, herstelden de poorten en zijvertrekken, en zetten de deuren erin.
- 58 En er heerste een grote vreugde onder het volk, omdat de ontering der heidenen was weggenomen.
- 59 Daarom nam Judas met zijn broers en heel het volk van Israël het besluit, om zolang zij leefden, elk jaar de dagen van de altaarwijding in vreugde en blijdschap te vieren, en wel acht dagen lang, te beginnen met de vijf en twintigste dag van de maand Kislew.
- 60 Tegelijkertijd begonnen ze met de aanleg van hoge ringmuren en zware torens rond de berg Sion, om te verhinderen dat de heidenen het heiligdom zouden binnendringen en het evenals vroeger vernielen;
- 61 hij legde er een bezetting in, om ze te bewaken. Bovendien versterkte hij Bet-Soer tot een verdedigingspost, om de bevolking tegen Iduméa te beschermen.

Basic Hash Usage Explained
At getBible, we've established a robust system to keep our API synchronized with the Crosswire project's modules. Let me explain how this integration works in simple terms.
We source our Bible text directly from the Crosswire modules. To monitor any updates, we generate "hash values" for each chapter, book, and translation. These hash values serve as unique identifiers that change only when the underlying content changes, thereby ensuring a tight integration between getBible and the Crosswire modules.
Every month, an automated process runs for approximately three hours. During this window, we fetch the latest Bible text from the Crosswire modules. Subsequently, we compare the new hash values and the text with the previous ones. Any detected changes trigger updates to both our official getBible hash repository and the Bible API for all affected translations. This system has been operating seamlessly for several years.
Once the updates are complete, any application utilizing our Bible API should monitor the hash values at the chapter, book, or translation level. Spotting a change in these values indicates that they should update their respective systems.
Hash values can change due to various reasons, including textual corrections like adding omitted verses, rectifying spelling errors, or addressing any discrepancies flagged by the publishers maintaining the modules at Crosswire.
The Crosswire initiative, also known as the SWORD Project, is the "source of truth" for getBible. Any modifications in the Crosswire modules get reflected in our API within days, ensuring our users access the most precise and current Bible text. We pledge to uphold this standard as long as getBible exists and our build scripts remain operational.
