- 1 Doe geen kwaad, dan treft u geen kwaad;
- 2 Houd u ver van de zonde, dan wijkt ze van u.
- 3 Zaai geen wind tegen uw broeder, Want zevenvoudig zoudt ge hem maaien.
- 4 Vraag van God geen heerschappij, Noch een erezetel van den koning;
- 5 Reken uzelf niet rechtvaardig voor God, En speel voor den koning niet den wijze.
- 6 Streef er niet naar, een ambt te bekleden, Zo ge de overmoed niet kunt breken; Anders gaat ge wellicht voor een machtige op zij, En laadt ge een smet op uw eerlijkheid.
- 7 Bezondig u niet in de bijeenkomst aan de poort, En breng u niet ten val in de gemeente;
- 8 Waag het niet, uw fout te herhalen, Want reeds de eerste maal blijft ge niet ongestraft.
- 9 Denk niet: Hij zal wel neerzien op mijn vele gaven; Als ik den Allerhoogste maar offer, neemt Hij mij aan.
- 10 Wil uw gebeden niet verkorten, En stel de gerechtigheid niet uit.
- 11 Zie nooit minachtend op een ongelukkige neer; Bedenk, dat er Eén is, die verheft en vernedert.
- 12 Beraam geen misdaad tegen uw broeder, Noch tegen een vriend of tegen een buur.
- 13 Schep geen behagen in leugen op leugen; Want daarop vertrouwen brengt geen zegen.
- 14 Wees geen prater in de bijeenkomst der groten, En gebruik niet veel woorden, als gebidt.
- 15 Wees niet afkerig van moeilijke arbeid, Noch van de landbouw, door God zo gewild.
- 16 Schat u niet hoger dan uw medeburgers; Bedenk, dat de toorn niet zal uitblijven.
- 17 Verneder uw hoogmoed, zo diep gij kunt; Want het einde van den mens is de worm. Zeg niet te gauw: Wat is dat een ramp! Laat het over aan God, en aanvaard zijn beschikking.
- 18 Ga een vriend niet verruilen voor geld, Of een trouwen broeder voor goud van Ofir.
- 19 Een verstandige vrouw moet ge niet verachten; Want bevallige schoonheid gaat boven paarlen.
- 20 Wees niet hard voor een slaaf, die trouw voor u werkt, Noch voor een knecht, die u vol toewijding dient;
- 21 Bemin een verstandigen slaaf als uzelf, En weiger hem de vrijheid niet.
- 22 Draag ook zorg voor uw vee, En doe het niet weg, zolang het van nut is.
- 23 Hebt ge zonen: houd ze in tucht, En neem voor hen vrouwen, als ze nog jong zijn.
- 24 Hebt ge dochters: draag dan zorg voor haar reinheid; Ga niet uitgelaten met ze om.
- 25 Huw uw dochter uit en uw taak is volbracht; Maar geef haar ten huwelijk aan een verstandig man.
- 26 Hebt ge een vrouw, verstoot haar niet; En huw niet een, die gescheiden is.
- 27 Eer uw vader met heel uw hart, En vergeet nooit de smarten van uw moeder.
- 28 Bedenk, dat ge aan hen het bestaan hebt te danken; Wat kunt ge hun geven, voor wat zij gaven aan u?
- 29 Heb vreze voor God, met heel uw hart, En eerbied voor zijn priesters;
- 30 Bemin uw Schepper met heel uw kracht, En laat zijn dienaars niet in de steek.
- 31 Eer God en eerbiedig den priester, En geef hem zijn aandeel, zoals het u is voorgeschreven: Het brood, de zoenoffers, en de hefoffers, De reinigingsoffers en de heilige tienden.
- 32 Reik echter ook den arme uw hand, Opdat uw zegen volkomen zij.
- 33 Geef aan alle levenden uw gaven, En weiger ook de doden uw liefde niet.
- 34 Houd u niet ver van die wenen, Maar treur met hen, die bedroefd zijn;
- 35 Trek uw hart niet af van den zieke, En ge zult door hem worden bemind.
- 36 Bij al uw handelen denk aan het einde, En in eeuwigheid zult ge niet zondigen.
