- 1 Beytanya köyünde Lazar adında bir adam yaşardı. Lazar hastaydı. Onun Meryem ve Marta adında iki kız kardeşi vardı.
- 2 Meryem, Rab’bin ayaklarına hoş kokulu yağ döken ve sonra da saçlarıyla kurulayan kadındı.
- 3 Meryem ve Marta İsa’ya, “Efendimiz, sevgili dostun Lazar hastalandı” diye haber yolladılar.
- 4 İsa bu haberi alınca, “Bu hastalık ölümle sonuçlanmayacak. Allah’a izzet getirecek ve Allah’ın semavî Oğlu’nun övülmesine hizmet edecek” dedi.
- 5 İsa Marta’yı, kız kardeşi Meryem’i ve Lazar’ı severdi.
- 6 Lazar’ın hasta olduğunu duyunca hemen Beytanya’ya gitmedi, bulunduğu yerde iki gün daha kaldı.
- 7 Sonra şakirtlerine, “Haydi, Yahudiye’ye geri dönelim” dedi.
- 8 Şakirtleri, “Hocam, Yahudiye halkı seni daha yeni taşlamaya kalktı. Şimdi oraya geri mi döneceksin?” diye sordular.
- 9 İsa şöyle cevap verdi: “Günün on iki saati aydınlık değil mi? Bir kimse gündüz vakti yürürse tökezleyip düşmez. Çünkü dünyanın ışığı sayesinde önünü görür.
- 10 Ama gece yürüyen, ışıktan mahrum olduğu için tökezler.”
- 11 Sonra, “Dostumuz Lazar uyudu, fakat onu uyandırmaya gideceğim” dedi.
- 12 Şakirtleri, “Efendimiz, uyuyorsa iyileşecektir” dediler.
- 13 İsa aslında Lazar’ın öldüğünü kastediyordu. Fakat şakirtleri Lazar’ın uyuduğunu sanmışlardı.
- 14 Bunun üzerine İsa açıkça, “Lazar öldü” dedi.
- 15 “Öldüğünde yanında olmadığıma seviniyorum. Sizin için de seviniyorum, çünkü bu vesileyle bana iman edeceksiniz. Şimdi Lazar’ın yanına gidelim.”
- 16 ‘İkiz’ adıyla anılan Tomas diğer şakirtlere, “Haydi biz de gidelim ve O’nunla birlikte ölelim!” dedi.
- 17 İsa Beytanya’ya vardı. O varmadan dört gün önce Lazar mezara konmuştu.
- 18 Beytanya Kudüs’ten sadece üç kilometre uzaklıktaydı.
- 19 Birçok Yahudi, kardeşlerini kaybeden Meryem ile Marta’yı teselli etmeye gelmişti.
- 20 Marta İsa’nın geldiğini duydu; O’nu karşılamaya çıktı. Meryem ise evde kaldı.
- 21 Marta İsa’ya, “Efendimiz, eğer burada olsaydın kardeşim ölmezdi.
- 22 Ama şimdi bile, Allah’tan ne dilersen yerine getireceğini biliyorum” dedi.
- 23 İsa, “Kardeşin dirilecek” dedi.
- 24 Marta, “Evet, Kıyamet gününde dirileceğini biliyorum” dedi.
- 25 İsa, “Diriliş ve hayat Ben’im. Bana iman eden, ölse de yaşayacaktır.
- 26 Bu dünyada yaşarken bana iman eden asla ölmez. Buna iman ediyor musun?” dedi.
- 27 Marta İsa’ya, “Evet Efendim! Beklediğimiz Allah’ın semavî Oğlu Mesih olduğuna iman ediyorum” cevabını verdi.
- 28 Marta bunu söyledikten sonra kardeşi Meryem’in yanına döndü. Onu bir kenara çekti, “Hoca burada ve seni çağırıyor” dedi.
- 29 Meryem bunu duyunca hemen yerinden kalktı, İsa’yı karşılamaya gitti.
- 30 İsa henüz şehre girmemişti. Marta’nın kendisini karşıladığı yerde duruyordu.
- 31 Meryem ile Marta’yı teselli etmek için evde bulunan Yahudiler Meryem’in kalkıp apar topar dışarı çıktığını gördüler. Ağlamak için mezara gideceğini sanarak onu takip ettiler.
- 32 Meryem İsa’nın yanına vardı. O’nu görünce ayaklarına kapandı, “Efendimiz, eğer burada olsaydın kardeşim ölmezdi” dedi.
- 33 Meryem’le arkasından gelen Yahudiler ağlıyordu; İsa’nın içini hüzün kapladı, yüreği sızladı.
- 34 “Onu nereye koydunuz?” diye sordu. İsa’ya, “Efendimiz, gel gör” dediler.
- 35 İsa ağladı.
- 36 Bunu gören Yahudiler, “Bakın, Lazar’ı ne kadar çok seviyormuş!” dediler.
- 37 İçlerinden bazıları ise şöyle dedi: “Bu adam körün gözlerini açtı; Lazar’ın ölmesine de engel olamaz mıydı?”
- 38 İsa büyük üzüntü içinde mezara vardı. Lazar’ın yatırıldığı mezar bir mağaraydı. Ağzı büyük bir taşla kapatılmıştı.
- 39 İsa, “Taşı çekin!” dedi. Lazar’ın kız kardeşi Marta, “Efendimiz, kardeşim öleli dört gün oldu. Artık kokmuştur” dedi.
- 40 İsa Marta’ya şöyle dedi: “Sana, ‘İman edersen Allah’ın kudretini göreceksin’ demedim mi?”
- 41 Mağaranın ağzını kapatan taşı yana yuvarladılar. İsa başını göğe kaldırdı ve dua etti: “Semavî Baba, beni işittiğin için sana şükrediyorum.
- 42 Beni her zaman işittiğini biliyorum. Fakat bunu, etrafımda duran kalabalık beni senin gönderdiğine iman etsin diye söylüyorum.”
- 43 Bundan sonra yüksek sesle, “Lazar, dışarı çık!” diye bağırdı.
- 44 Ölmüş olan Lazar, mezardan dışarı çıktı. Elleri ve ayakları keten bezlerle sarılıydı. Yüzü bir peşkirle örtülüydü. İsa yanındakilere, “Onu çözün, bırakın gitsin” dedi.
- 45 Meryem’e gelen ve İsa’nın yaptıklarını gören birçok Yahudi, İsa’ya iman etti.
- 46 Ama içlerinden bazıları Ferisilere gidip İsa’nın yaptıklarını anlattı.
- 47 Bunun üzerine başrahipler ve Ferisiler Yahudi Yüksek Meclisi’ni topladılar. “Ne yapacağız? Bu adam birçok alâmet yapıyor.
- 48 Eğer böyle devam etmesine izin verirsek herkes O’na iman edecek. Romalılar da gelip mabedimizi ve halkımızı yok edecek” dediler.
- 49 O sene başrahip olan ve toplantıda bulunan Kayafa, “Sizler hiçbir şey bilmiyorsunuz!” dedi.
- 50 “Bütün halk yok olacağına, halk uğruna tek bir adamın yok olması daha iyidir. Bunu anlamıyor musunuz?”
- 51 Kayafa bunu kendiliğinden söylemedi. O sene başrahipti, İsa’nın Yahudi halkı uğruna öleceğine dair kehanette bulunuyordu.
- 52 İsa sadece Yahudi halkı için değil, Allah’ın dört bir yana dağılmış bütün evlâtları için ölecekti. Böylece Allah onları bir araya getirip tek bir halk yapacaktı.
- 53 Yahudi önderler o günden sonra İsa’yı öldürmeyi tasarladılar.
- 54 Bu sebeple İsa Yahudiler arasında alenen dolaşamaz oldu. Çöle yakın Efrayim şehrine gitti. Şakirtleriyle birlikte orada kaldı.
- 55 Yahudilerin Fısıh Bayramı yaklaşıyordu. Taşrada yaşayan birçok kişi, bayramdan önce gerekli hazırlıkları yapmak ve arınmak için Kudüs’e gitti.
- 56 Orada İsa’yı aramaya başladılar. Mabette birbirlerine, “Ne dersiniz? Sizce bayramı kutlamaya gelecek mi?” diye sordular.
- 57 Başrahiplerle Ferisiler İsa’yı yakalamak için nerede olduğunu bilenlerin haber vermesini emretmişlerdi.
